Ibrahim Al Alawi, UAE Ambassador to the Republic of Peru, met with Carlos Espá, Peru’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, on Tuesday, 18 August, to discuss expanding bilateral trade and infrastructure investment. The high-level meeting in Lima focused on establishing new frameworks for cooperation in finance and digital government transformation. Water Security and El Niño Response A primary focus of the discussions involved the water sector, specifically the development of drinking-water infrastructure in Peru. These projects are intended to mitigate the impacts of the El Niño weather phenomenon, which frequently disrupts Peru’s water supply and agricultural output. The UAE delegation explored potential support for these critical utility projects as part of broader environmental cooperation. The timing of the meeting is linked to the upcoming 2026 United Nations Water Conference, which the UAE will co-host with Senegal in Abu Dhabi at the end of the year. Ambassador Al Alawi briefed the Peruvian minister on the UAE’s global water security initiatives and invited increased Peruvian participation in the year-end summit.
