US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday, 19 August, that Washington is prepared to deploy "draconian sanctions" against Iran, asserting that existing naval operations in the Strait of Hormuz have been "100% successful." Speaking to technology leaders in Washington, D.C., the President indicated that further restrictive measures could be imminent depending on Tehran’s actions. Oil prices and production shifts Trump dismissed concerns that tensions in the Persian Gulf would trigger an energy crisis, noting that oil prices remain stable between $84 and $85 per barrel despite previous predictions of $350. He credited increased domestic production in Texas, Alaska, and Louisiana, along with new pipeline infrastructure, for reducing global reliance on the Strait of Hormuz. "I think the Hormuz Strait is not going to be quite as important as it was in the past," Trump said, adding that the U.S. naval blockade has remained "extremely effective" in controlling the transit route while ensuring oil shipments continue. Conflicting claims on maritime control The status of the Strait remains a point of intense friction. While Trump claimed the U.S. Navy maintains "100% control" of the waterway, Iranian officials have rejected these assertions.
