Space42 and Viasat partner with Terrestar to create a $1 billion interoperable satellite network for direct-to-device connectivity.

Space42, Viasat, and Terrestar Solutions signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Thursday, 29 October, to develop a standards-based interoperability framework for direct-to-device (D2D) satellite connectivity. The agreement, signed in Ottawa, establishes a partnership between Terrestar’s planned Canadian low-Earth orbit (LEO) constellation, CaStar, and Equatys, a global shared infrastructure platform. Global Interoperability Framework The collaboration aims to create a multi-system non-terrestrial network (NTN) that allows different satellite operators to interwork while maintaining full ownership of their respective assets. This "sovereign shell" approach enables global scale for D2D services—allowing standard smartphones to connect directly to satellites—without compromising national control over critical communications infrastructure. The framework will utilize 3GPP NTN specifications and GSMA roaming standards to ensure vendor-neutral interfaces. The announcement follows a binding agreement signed in September 2026 by Space42 and Viasat to co-found Equatys, a venture backed by up to US$1 billion (Dh3.67 billion) in combined equity commitments. Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, UAE Minister of Foreign Trade, stated that the partnership reflects the deepening trade links between the UAE and Canada following the recent Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).
