Italy reaches 79.78 percent gas storage capacity ahead of the October deadline despite a broader European slowdown.
Italy’s natural gas reserves reached 79.78 percent capacity on Sunday, 23 August, hitting the threshold more than two months ahead of the government’s October 31 storage deadline. Data released by Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE) confirms the country has secured approximately 162.3 terawatt-hours (TWh) of fuel as part of its winter energy security strategy. Despite meeting early targets, current inventory levels remain lower than those recorded during the same period in 2025. On August 19, 2025, Italian storage stood at 85.56 percent, representing 173.7 TWh. The year-on-year decline reflects a broader trend across the continent as European nations manage fluctuating supply chains and high demand. European storage trends hit 15-year low Across the European Union, overall gas storage levels reached 61.37 percent, equivalent to 693.6 TWh. GIE data indicates this is the lowest storage level recorded for this time of year since 2009. By comparison, European inventories were at 74.36 percent on August 19 last year, highlighting a significant contraction in the regional energy buffer. In Germany, the operator of Europe's largest storage capacity, inventories crossed the 50 percent threshold for the first time this year. German storage currently stands at 50.06 percent, a sharp decrease from the 67.5 percent logged during the corresponding period in 2025. Implications for winter energy costs The acceleration of Italian storage is intended to mitigate price volatility during the peak…
