Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) political deputy, Brigadier General Yadollah Javani, warned on Monday, 17 August, that Iran’s military posture is shifting toward an offensive form to deliver "strategic surprises" against adversaries. The statement to state broadcaster IRIB coincides with the expiration of a 60-day memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Tehran and Washington intended to prevent regional escalation. Shift to Offensive Posture General Javani stated that under new appointment decrees issued by Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, any military action taken by Iran will now take on an "offensive form" to ensure maximum deterrence. While Javani maintained that the IRGC remains defensive in principle, he warned the United States and Israel to expect "transformative approaches" and proactive strikes. Javani is a veteran hardliner known for his role in suppressing the 2009 presidential election protests, where he vowed to quash internal opposition. Ceasefire Framework in Jeopardy The hardening rhetoric follows conflicting reports regarding the Islamabad-brokered ceasefire framework. The 60-day arrangement, which addressed access to the Strait of Hormuz, frozen assets, and nuclear negotiations, reached its deadline on 17 August.
