UN Security Council Condemns Attacks on UAE Barakah Nuclear Plant

The UN Security Council has denounced threats against the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, calling for the protection of civilian energy infrastructure.

The United Nations Security Council has issued a formal condemnation following threats and attempted strikes targeting the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in Abu Dhabi. The council categorized the targeting of critical energy infrastructure as a violation of international law and a threat to regional security, demanding immediate cessation of such hostilities. Security of Critical Infrastructure The Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, located in the Al Dhafra region of Abu Dhabi, is the first multi-unit operational nuclear facility in the Arab world. The plant consists of four APR-1400 units, with a total generating capacity of 5,600 megawatts. Currently, three units are in commercial operation, contributing significantly to the UAE’s electricity grid and its decarbonization targets. Any threat to these facilities is viewed by the international community as a breach of the 1977 Additional Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions, which prohibits attacks on installations containing dangerous forces, including nuclear electrical generating stations.
