UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres demands a permanent end to hostilities in Gaza to allow humanitarian aid and regional stability.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza on Monday, 5 October, ahead of the anniversary of the October 7 conflict. In an official statement, the UN chief urged a halt to hostilities to allow for large-scale humanitarian aid and the establishment of a regional political path toward peace. Humanitarian Crisis and Casualties The Secretary-General described the 2023 Hamas attack on Israel, which resulted in the deaths of more than 1,200 people and the abduction of 251 hostages, as "abhorrent." However, he stressed that the subsequent military campaign has led to a "massive loss of life" and displacement for Palestinians in Gaza. According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, the death toll from the conflict has surpassed 74,200 people. Guterres noted that while a brief ceasefire brokered by the United States in October 2025 provided temporary relief, it failed to secure long-term stability or a credible recovery plan. The current deadlock remains centered on disarmament; Israel maintains it will not withdraw forces until Hamas disarms, while Hamas has proposed a gradual reduction of its arsenal rather than immediate surrender.
