Britain has implemented a sweeping ban on trade with Israeli settlements in the West Bank, a move that targets construction, financing, and real estate services in the occupied territories. While the legislation is expected to take effect within six to nine months, it has already triggered a severe diplomatic breakdown between London and Tel Aviv. However, the specific trade with occupied Palestinian territories is estimated at just £38 million, representing less than 1 per cent of the total volume. UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband clarified that the sanctions distinguish between Israel’s internationally recognised pre-1967 borders and the settlements, which the UK considers illegal under international law. The ban covers the import of all settlement-produced goods and prohibits British companies from providing infrastructure or advertising services for settlement properties. Crucially, the UK will also refuse new export licences for items that "materially contribute to the occupation," a move that could affect specific dual-use technologies and equipment.
