The UK and GCC focus on low-carbon technology and hydrogen cooperation as free trade negotiations enter final stages.

The United Kingdom and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) are finalising terms for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) that prioritises the cross-border flow of clean energy technologies and low-carbon investment. The deal aims to streamline trade between Britain and the six-nation bloc, comprising the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, and Bahrain. Lowering Barriers for Green Technology Negotiations have focused on reducing or eliminating tariffs on goods essential to the energy transition, including wind turbine components, solar panels, and hydrogen processing equipment. By removing these trade barriers, both regions expect to accelerate the deployment of large-scale renewable projects. UK government data shows that total bilateral trade with the GCC reached approximately £59 billion ($75.4 billion) in the period ending mid-2023, with energy services forming a substantial portion of this value.
