UAE Weather: Why Car Sensors Show Higher Temperatures than Official Data

Road radiation and sensor placement cause discrepancies of up to 10 degrees between vehicle dashboards and meteorological stations.

Motorists across the UAE frequently report temperature readings on vehicle dashboards exceeding 50°C, even when official weather forecasts cite figures in the mid-40s. This discrepancy, often as high as 10 degrees, is the result of differing measurement environments and the specific technology used in automotive sensors. Standard Meteorological Measurement The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) records official temperatures using standardized equipment placed in specific conditions to ensure accuracy. These instruments are housed inside white, ventilated wooden boxes located 1.5 to 2 meters above the ground. To avoid inflation by direct solar radiation, these stations are always placed in the shade and away from heat-absorbing surfaces like asphalt or concrete. Car Sensor Placement and Asphalt Heat In contrast, most modern vehicles use thermistors rather than traditional thermometers. These sensors are typically located behind the front grille or under the front bumper. This placement leaves them vulnerable to "heat soak" from the road surface. Asphalt absorbs significant solar energy, often reaching temperatures much higher than the ambient air. As the road radiates this…
