UAE nominates Fujairah Wadi Wurayah for UNESCO World Heritage status

The UAE Ministry of Culture and the Fujairah Environment Authority have formally submitted a nomination file to UNESCO to include Wadi Wurayah National Park on the World Heritage List. The move, announced on Friday, 24 July, aims to secure international protection for one of the region’s most significant freshwater ecosystems and biodiversity hotspots. Ecological and Cultural Significance Wadi Wurayah covers an area of approximately 127 square kilometres in the Hajar Mountains of Fujairah. It is home to more than 800 species of flora and fauna, including the rare Arabian Tahr and the Omani Owl. The site is already recognised as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance and was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2018. This latest bid seeks to elevate its status to a World Heritage site based on its unique hydrological systems and archaeological remains dating back thousands of years. The submission follows an extensive evaluation process led by the Ministry of Culture in collaboration with local environmental experts.
