UAE Launches Textile Waste Initiative To Cut Landfill Pollution

The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment targets circular economy goals to manage 500,000 tonnes of annual fabric waste.

The UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) has launched a national initiative to address textile waste and reduce industrial pollution across the country. The program introduces a structured framework for the collection, sorting, and recycling of discarded fabrics to prevent material from entering landfills. Current data indicates the UAE generates approximately 500,000 tonnes of textile waste annually. Under the new initiative, the ministry will coordinate with private sector partners and waste management authorities to establish dedicated collection points and specialized recycling facilities. This effort aims to reduce the environmental footprint of the local fashion and manufacturing sectors by reclaiming valuable fibers. National Recycling Targets The initiative operates under the UAE Circular Economy Policy 2021–2031, which identifies manufacturing and environmental health as priority sectors. By implementing mandatory sorting protocols and incentivizing textile recovery, the ministry seeks to convert discarded materials into raw fibers for industrial re-use.
