UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has issued Federal Decree-Law No. 16 of 2024, establishing the UAE Federal Authority for AI and Data Governance. The new entity operates as an independent federal body reporting directly to the UAE Cabinet, tasked with regulating the country’s rapidly expanding artificial intelligence sector and data management infrastructure. Regulatory Scope and Mandate The authority is mandated to develop and implement comprehensive policies for AI ethics, data privacy, and digital governance across all federal entities. It will oversee the classification of data, establish national standards for AI development, and ensure that digital technologies are deployed in compliance with UAE legal frameworks. The body will also represent the UAE in international AI forums and negotiate bilateral digital cooperation agreements. Structurally, the authority will be governed by a Board of Directors.
