A 35-year-old Pakistani expatriate in the UAE survived a "widowmaker" heart attack caused by social smoking, medical officials confirmed on Friday. The case, highlighted to coincide with World No Tobacco Day, demonstrates that even occasional tobacco use can trigger life-threatening cardiac events in young adults with no prior health conditions. The 'Widowmaker' Diagnosis The patient sought emergency medical care after experiencing acute chest pain and breathing difficulties. Medical examinations identified a 100% blockage in the left anterior descending (LAD) artery. This specific type of cardiac event is known as a "widowmaker" because the LAD artery provides a significant portion of blood flow to the heart, and blockages often result in immediate fatality without rapid intervention. Surgeons performed an emergency angioplasty to clear the obstruction and stabilize the patient. Despite being only 35 years old and lacking common risk factors such as hypertension or diabetes, the patient’s history of occasional social smoking was identified as the primary cause of the arterial failure.
