The UAE is overhauling its national defense strategy, prioritizing the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomous systems into its military infrastructure. This shift marks a transition from a traditional procurement model to a localized, technology-driven ecosystem aimed at securing sovereign defense capabilities and reducing reliance on foreign hardware. Shift to Sovereign Manufacturing Central to this new playbook is the EDGE Group, the UAE’s state-owned defense conglomerate established in 2019. The nation has set a target to localize 50% of its defense procurement by 2030, a move that requires a massive scale-up in domestic production. By consolidating over 25 entities, EDGE now focuses on four core pillars: platforms and systems, missiles and weapons, electronic warfare, and cyber defense.
