Former professional racing driver Tim Mullen has successfully undergone a double lung transplant at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi (CCAD) following a critical decline in his health. The 47-year-old athlete, who has managed cystic fibrosis throughout his career, required the surgery to survive after his lung function plummeted to life-threatening levels. Ten-Hour Surgical Procedure The complex operation lasted 10 hours and was performed by a specialized surgical team led by Dr. Usman Ahmad, Department Chair of Thoracic Surgery at CCAD. Mullen had been on the transplant waiting list before a compatible donor was identified through Hayat, the UAE’s national organ donation program. The procedure involved replacing both diseased lungs with healthy donor organs, a high-risk intervention necessitated by the progressive nature of his genetic condition. Mullen, a veteran of the British GT Championship and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, faced significant physical challenges prior to the surgery.
