For generations across the Arabian Peninsula, the rising of Suhail has served as the definitive astronomical turning point, signalling the gradual decline of the fierce summer heat and the welcoming prelude to the cooler autumn season. Ibrahim Al Jarwan, Chairman of the Emirates Astronomy Society, confirmed that the brilliant red-orange star will become visible low along the south-eastern horizon approximately 40 minutes before sunrise. Situated approximately 310 to 313 light-years from Earth in the southern constellation of Carina, Canopus is the second-brightest star in the night sky after Sirius, making its pre-dawn emergence easily identifiable from dark, open desert vantage points. The appearance of Suhail marks the conclusion of peak summer and introduces a 53-day astronomical phase traditionally recognized in Emirati heritage.
