Sharjah's Dh200 million tunnel project at Al Taawun Square aims to reduce peak-hour congestion and cut travel times for Dubai commuters by 25%.

The Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) has initiated the Al Taawun Tunnel project, a Dh200 million infrastructure development aimed at resolving long-standing traffic bottlenecks between Sharjah and Dubai. The project targets Al Taawun Square, one of the most congested intersections in the emirate, which serves as a primary transit point for thousands of daily commuters. Infrastructure and Capacity The new tunnel will consist of three lanes in each direction, providing a direct subterranean route that bypasses the existing surface-level roundabout. By separating through-traffic from local residential movements, the SRTA expects to significantly increase the vehicle capacity of the intersection. The scope of work also includes the expansion of Al Taawun Street and the improvement of entry and exit points to the Al Nahda and Al Mamzar districts. Engineering plans confirm that the project will integrate with the existing Al Ittihad Road (E11) network.
