Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial has selected 297 works by 145 international artists for its 12th edition, opening on October 7. The event, organised by the Sharjah Department of Culture, will also feature an $8,000 Jury Prize specifically for an Emirati calligrapher. The selection committee concluded its review on August 26, assessing 459 submissions from 182 calligraphers and artists. The biennial establishes Sharjah as a global centre for Arabic calligraphy, attracting participants and visitors worldwide, aligning with the emirate's commitment to supporting and preserving Arabic calligraphy as part of Arab and Islamic cultural identity. Showcasing Global Talent and Emirati Artistry The Biennial explores the theme of "Balance," featuring diverse styles and interpretations of Arabic script that reflect its historical depth and contemporary evolution. The extensive international participation underscores the event's reputation within the global arts community and provides an unparalleled opportunity to engage with one of the Arab world's most revered art forms. Prizes and Cultural Impact for the UAE Artists will compete for a Grand Prize of $15,000 (Dh55,095). Additional prizes include three $8,000 awards for the Traditional Direction category, and three $8,000 prizes for the Modern and Contemporary Calligraphy category.
