Saudi Arabia Deploys Heat Mitigation Tech to Protect Hajj Pilgrims

Saudi authorities deploy 'cool asphalt' technology and misting fans as Makkah temperatures exceed 45 degrees Celsius during Hajj.

Saudi Arabian authorities have implemented an extensive heat mitigation strategy to protect over 1.8 million pilgrims as temperatures in Makkah and the Holy Sites frequently exceed 45 degrees Celsius. The measures include the deployment of advanced cooling technologies, structural shade, and strict movement protocols designed to reduce the risk of heat exhaustion and sunstroke during the annual Hajj pilgrimage. Advanced Cooling Infrastructure A primary component of the cooling initiative is the application of white, heat-reflective coating on roads surrounding the Holy Sites. This "cool asphalt" technology, utilized in areas like the Jamarat bridge and pedestrian paths in Mina, reportedly reduces surface temperatures by up to 15 degrees Celsius compared to traditional black asphalt. Additionally, a network of giant misting fans has been activated across Makkah and Madinah, operating continuously to lower ambient temperatures in high-density gathering areas.
