Rumesh Pathirage wins Asian Games javelin gold for Sri Lanka in Nagoya

Rumesh Pathirage secured Sri Lanka’s first athletics gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya on Tuesday, 29 September, defeating a field of elite competitors including Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem. The 23-year-old recorded a winning throw of 88.55 metres to claim the men’s javelin title. India’s Yashvir Singh took silver with a throw of 85.72 metres, while teammate Rohit Yadav secured bronze at 84.35 metres. Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem finished in fourth place, failing to reach the podium in a surprise result for the defending Olympic gold medallist. Transition from fast bowling Pathirage’s path to the podium began on the cricket pitch. At age 16, he was recorded bowling at 134km/h in a national fast-bowling competition in Sri Lanka. The athlete has credited his early years as a cricketer for his current success, noting that the mechanics of fast bowling directly influenced his javelin technique. He transitioned to athletics in 2017, initially recording throws of 30 metres. Within two months, he improved to 63 metres. Despite setting a national record of 85.45 metres in 2024, he missed the Paris Olympics qualification mark by five centimetres.
