The RTA deploys a massive tunnel boring machine to drill the 30-km Blue Line route beneath International City.
The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has deployed a Massive Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) to begin excavation for the Dubai Metro Blue Line, specifically targeting the sections beneath International City. According to RTA technical specifications, the TBM functions as a mobile underground factory, capable of drilling through solid rock while simultaneously installing the concrete segments that form the permanent tunnel lining. Advanced Tunneling Technology and Specs The TBM used for the Blue Line project is designed to navigate the dense urban landscape of International City without disrupting surface-level traffic or existing utilities. The machine features a rotating cutting head that breaks down soil and rock, which is then transported to the surface via a conveyor system. Behind the cutter head, hydraulic jacks push the machine forward, allowing the automated system to bolt pre-cast reinforced concrete rings into place at a rate of approximately 10 to 15 meters per day, depending on soil conditions. This phase is critical for the 30-kilometer Blue Line expansion, which aims to connect the existing Red and Green lines. The project includes 14 stations—nine elevated and…
