Ras Al Khaimah mourns Emirati who died in Mykonos drowning accident

Thousands of mourners gathered in Ras Al Khaimah on Thursday, 27 August, for the funeral of Badr Abdullah Mohammed Al Harmi, a 35-year-old Emirati who died in a drowning accident on the Greek island of Mykonos. Al Harmi, a government employee from the Al Mairid area, died on Monday, 24 August, after being caught in powerful sea currents while swimming with friends. Medical reports confirmed he suffered a cardiac arrest while battling rough conditions. His body was repatriated to the UAE via Dubai International Airport at 5am on Thursday before being transferred to his home emirate for burial at Al Hudaibah Cemetery. Details of the Mykonos incident According to family sources and incident details, Al Harmi had traveled from Abu Dhabi to Greece on Monday. After arriving in Athens, the group took a four-and-a-half-hour ferry to Mykonos. Upon arrival, the group visited the beach while waiting for their 3pm hotel check-in. Witnesses reported that strong currents swept the group into deeper waters shortly after they entered the sea. While his companions managed to reach safety, Al Harmi was overwhelmed by the waves. The tragedy occurred following a period of prolonged travel, with sources noting the victim had little opportunity for rest during the journey from the UAE to the Greek islands.
