New 10-year space license aims to boost UAE internet resilience and 2031 goals

The Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) has issued a 10-year General Space Services License to Starlink Satellite Communications LLC, enabling the company to provide broadband satellite internet services across the UAE. The license, announced on Friday, 28 August, authorizes Starlink to establish, operate, and manage a public satellite communications network. This regulatory approval adds a space-based layer to the UAE’s existing digital infrastructure, which currently relies on terrestrial fiber-optic and 5G networks. The move is intended to diversify internet access and ensure network continuity during emergencies. Expanded Connectivity for Key Sectors Under the terms of the agreement, Starlink’s services will be available to individual consumers, private businesses, and government entities. The scope of the license specifically includes satellite connectivity for the maritime and aviation sectors, as well as logistics and energy operations.
