Middle East Tourism Surpasses Pre-Pandemic Levels with 22% Growth

UN Tourism data shows the Middle East is the only global region to exceed pre-pandemic arrival levels, with the UAE and Saudi Arabia leading the recovery.

The Middle East has emerged as the fastest-growing tourism destination globally, with international arrivals in early 2024 climbing 22% above 2019 levels. According to the latest UN Tourism (formerly UNWTO) data, the region is currently the only global market to have fully recovered and surpassed its pre-pandemic performance metrics. UAE and Saudi Arabia Drive Growth Dubai recorded 17.15 million international overnight visitors in 2023, representing a 19.4% increase from 2022. Performance at Dubai International Airport (DXB) supported this growth, with total passenger traffic reaching 86.9 million in 2023, surpassing 2019 figures. In Abu Dhabi, the Department of Culture and Tourism reported 24 million visitors last year, driven by cultural infrastructure developments in the Saadiyat Cultural District, including the upcoming Zayed National Museum and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. Saudi Arabia surpassed its 100 million total tourist target in 2023, seven years ahead of the original 2030 schedule.
