Cobalt Breach and Disqualification The 12-month ban follows a positive test for cobalt in a horse under Costa’s care, which returned levels exceeding the permitted threshold. In professional horse racing, cobalt is strictly regulated; while it is a naturally occurring trace element, excessive concentrations can act as a performance-enhancing agent by increasing red blood cell production. The disqualification takes immediate effect and prevents Costa from training, entering horses in races, or having any official involvement in the sport for the duration of the term.
