India CKYC 2.0 upgrade eases financial compliance for UAE NRIs

India will upgrade its central identity registry to allow UAE-based NRIs to update financial records across all banks via a single portal.
Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) residing in the UAE will soon be able to update their personal information across all Indian financial institutions through a single portal as India prepares to roll out Central Know Your Customer (CKYC) 2.0. The upgrade aims to eliminate the requirement for individuals to undergo repeated identity verification when opening new bank accounts, purchasing insurance, or investing in mutual funds. The Central Registry of Securitisation Asset Reconstruction and Security Interest of India (CERSAI) is leading the transition to the 2.0 framework. Under the current system, while records are centralized, updates made at one institution do not always trigger automatic synchronization across the entire financial network. The new version will ensure that a single update to a mobile number, address, or tax identifier is instantly reflected across all linked financial entities. Integration of Digilocker and Indian Passports CKYC 2.0 will integrate more deeply with DigiLocker and the Indian passport database to streamline verification for the overseas diaspora. For the 3.5 million Indians in the UAE, this reduces the administrative burden of physical documentation when managing domestic assets. The system uses a unique 14-digit CKYC Identifier (CKYCI) assigned to each investor, which financial firms use to pull verified data from the central repository.
