IAEA Chief Rafael Grossi warns of a 'major escalation' in nuclear safety risks after three direct hits on the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has warned of a "serious compromise of nuclear safety" following multiple drone strikes on the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) in Ukraine. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi confirmed that the facility's main reactor containment structures sustained at least three direct hits on Sunday, marking a significant escalation in the conflict's impact on infrastructure. While the IAEA confirmed that the damage to the Unit 6 reactor did not immediately compromise nuclear safety, officials described the incident as a "reckless" action that could lead to a major nuclear accident. This event represents the first time the plant has been directly targeted since November 2022. "This is a major escalation of the nuclear safety and security dangers facing the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant," Grossi stated in an official communication.
