The Greek Cultural Center (GCC) has launched its summer 2024 program in Astoria, New York, featuring a schedule of theatrical performances and contemporary cinema screenings. The seasonal lineup aims to showcase Greek literary heritage and modern filmmaking to international audiences. Theater and Classical Literature The program’s theatrical centerpiece is a stage production of "The Woman of Zakynthos," based on the seminal work by Dionysios Solomos. Directed by Dimos Avdeliodis, the performance features actress Olia Lazaridou in the lead role. The production examines themes of morality and national identity, drawing from Solomos’s unfinished 19th-century prose work regarding the Siege of Missolonghi. According to the GCC, the theater schedule includes a series of limited runs throughout late June and early July. The center, located at 26-80 30th Street in Astoria, has functioned as a primary hub for Hellenic performing arts for 50 years, providing a platform for both established and emerging artists.
