PARIS — More than 12,000 people have been evacuated from homes, campsites, and holiday resorts in Southwestern France as a fast-moving wildfire continues to consume thousands of hectares of dry pine forest near Arcachon Bay in the Gironde department. The outbreak, which ignited earlier this week amid record-breaking seasonal heat and dry timber conditions, underscores the extreme environmental pressures gripping Southern Europe this summer. Local authorities in Gironde confirmed that the blaze has already destroyed roughly 2,400 hectares of vegetation, driven by erratic wind gusts that have complicated airborne containment efforts. Arcachon Bay, famed for its towering Dune of Pilat and historic oyster-farming villages, is currently experiencing one of its most severe fire containment operations in recent years. Emergency shelters have been established in nearby sports complexes and municipal centers to house displaced residents and tourists, many of whom were instructed to leave coastal campgrounds on short notice.
