For the first time, the competition will be hosted by three nations, significantly altering the traditional single-host logistics and match scheduling. Expanded Format and Triple Opening Ceremonies FIFA confirmed the tournament will begin on June 11, 2026, with three separate opening ceremonies held in Mexico City, Toronto, and Los Angeles. Mexico’s Estadio Azteca is scheduled to host the primary opening match, making it the first stadium to host three World Cup opening games after its roles in 1970 and 1986. The expanded format moves away from the 32-team structure used since 1998, increasing the total number of games from 64 to 104. The group stage will consist of 12 groups of four teams each.
