Egypt Uncovers 24 Gold Tongue Amulets In Sealed Ancient Tombs

Archaeologists in Egypt have discovered 24 gold tongue amulets and several sealed tombs during an excavation mission at the ancient site of El Bahnasa in the Minya Governorate. The findings were uncovered by a joint Spanish-Egyptian mission from the University of Barcelona and the Supreme Council of Antiquities. Ritualistic Funerary Artifacts The mission identified the 24 gold foil amulets, shaped like human tongues, placed inside the mouths of the deceased. According to Egyptian mythology, these artifacts were intended to grant the dead the ability to speak before the court of Osiris, the god of the underworld, in the afterlife. The discovery occurred within a series of tombs that date back to the Roman, Ptolemaic, and Byzantine periods. The excavation team reported that several of the tombs remained completely sealed since antiquity. This preservation allowed researchers to examine the internal structures and burial goods in their original context, unaffected by historical or modern looting.
