Dubai to install weight sensors on waste fleet to track citywide disposal data

Dubai Municipality will install weight sensors across its entire waste collection fleet to track disposal patterns in real-time, officials announced on Wednesday, 9 September. The initiative is part of a broader shift by UAE authorities to transition from traditional waste management to a circular economy where refuse is treated as a commercial resource. Data-driven waste management The rollout of sensors aims to provide precise data on the volume and origin of waste across the city. Eng Mohammad Ahmad Al Rayees, Director for Waste Strategy and Project Department at Dubai Municipality, stated that the municipality is moving beyond awareness campaigns to invest in collection and sorting technology. The sensors will integrate with the 'Clean City Index' app, a manifest system that requires operators to log waste data to ensure commercial visibility for decision-making. The announcement coincided with the launch of the 25th cycle of the 'Clean UAE' campaign, organized by the Emirates Environmental Group (EEG). The Silver Jubilee edition of the campaign was launched under the patronage of the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) at a press conference in Dubai. The campaign is scheduled to begin in Dubai on Saturday, 5 December, and will conclude in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday, 15 December.
