Commuters can save significantly by understanding the difference between street-hail fares and app-based booking surcharges.

Dubai commuters can reduce travel costs by up to 60% by opting for street-hailing over app-based bookings, as taxi fares fluctuate based on time, location, and booking method. According to Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) regulations, the base fare for a taxi hailed from the street is Dh5 between 6am and 10pm, compared to a minimum Dh9 starting fare for journeys booked via apps like Careem, S’hail, Yango, or Bolt. Cheapest and peak periods for app bookings For those using digital platforms, the starting fare rises to Dh13 during peak hours. On weekdays (Monday to Thursday), these peak windows occur between 8am and 10am, and 4pm to 8pm. On Fridays, the Dh13 peak fare extends from 4pm until midnight. The weekend peak (Saturday and Sunday) also begins at 4pm and lasts until midnight, though there is no increased morning fare on these days. The most consistent window for the lowest Dh9 app-booking fare is between 10am and 4pm daily. During these off-peak times, the booking fee is Dh4, rising to Dh4.50 at night (10pm to 5.59am) and Dh7.50 during rush hours. The per-kilometre rate remains fixed at Dh2.45 for all standard RTA taxis, regardless of how they are secured. Event surcharges and airport rates Special starting fares apply at high-traffic hubs and major events.
