Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched a Dh350 million project to upgrade the Nol card system into a digital, account-based ticketing platform. The overhaul represents the most significant technical shift in the city’s transit payment infrastructure since the Dubai Metro commenced operations in 2009. Transition to Biometric Payments The new system moves away from traditional card-based storage to a centralized, cloud-based digital wallet. This transition enables the integration of biometric authentication, including facial recognition technology, for fare payments. Commuters will be able to access the Metro, Tram, buses, and marine transport without the need for a physical plastic card, using digital credentials linked to their accounts. The Dh350 million contract covers the implementation of an advanced back-office system designed to handle real-time data processing.
