Dubai RTA Opens Five-Kilometre Emirates Road Expansion Adding Two New Lanes to Elevate Corridor Capacity to 16,000 Vehicles Per Hour

DUBAI - In a decisive infrastructural advancement engineered to optimize cross-country mobility, alleviate peak-hour congestion, and enhance transit safety, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced the official opening of a major 5-kilometre expansion of Emirates Road on August 30, 2026. The vital civil development adds two dedicated new lanes for traffic flowing from the Emirate of Sharjah toward the Wadi Al Amardi Area, expanding the corridor from six to eight lanes and substantially augmenting the arterial highway's operational throughput. The project forms an integral component of the RTA’s proactive, long-term master plan to continuously upgrade Dubai’s foundational road network. Guided by rigorous traffic flow simulation models, demographic projections, and rapid urban growth patterns, the expansion is tailored to accommodate the continuous rise in daily vehicular movement between Dubai and the Northern Emirates while providing a sustainable, resilient mobility system built for future expansion. By increasing the total number of lanes from six to eight along the targeted 5-kilometre stretch, the highway’s overall carrying capacity jumps from 12,000 to 16,000 vehicles per hour.
