Dubai Police seize 17 tankers in major hazardous waste dumping crackdown

Dubai Police have seized 17 tankers and charged 18 suspects following a coordinated crackdown on the illegal dumping of sewage, petrochemical waste, and hazardous materials. The enforcement action, conducted during the first six months of 2026, involved a joint operation by Dubai Police, Dubai Municipality, and the Dubai Environment and Climate Change Authority. Heavy penalties for waste violations The arrests highlight a stringent UAE legal framework where environmental fines can reach Dh10 million for the most severe offences. While the maximum penalty is reserved for nuclear substance violations under Federal Law No. 24 of 1999, authorities are increasingly deploying high-value fines for industrial and wastewater mismanagement. Under Federal Law No. 12 of 2018, private entities face up to Dh1 million for the illegal burial or burning of waste in unauthorised locations. In Dubai, specific local regulations under Law No. 18 of 2024 allow for fines up to Dh500,000 for general waste management violations. Executive Council Resolution No. 58 of 2017 further outlines specific penalties, including Dh50,000 for disposing of hazardous waste at unauthorised sites and Dh20,000 for transporting hazardous waste into the emirate from external sources without authorization.
