Chennai is accelerating efforts to transition its Global Capability Centre (GCC) landscape from low-cost back-office operations to high-value innovation hubs. The shift aims to capture a larger share of the global R&D market as multinational corporations seek to localize advanced engineering and product development within India. Transitioning from Support to Innovation The city currently hosts over 300 Global Capability Centres, representing a significant portion of India’s 1,600+ established units. Traditionally utilized for cost-arbitrage and administrative support, these centres are now being pressured to "climb the value chain." This involves moving into specialized domains such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), semiconductor design, and SaaS (Software as a Service) development. Industry data indicates that Chennai accounts for approximately 12% to 15% of the total GCC talent pool in India. To sustain this growth, the regional ecosystem requires a shift toward "Tier-1" complex tasks.
