Chennai Corporation Imposes ₹25,000 Fine for Waste Management Violations

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) targets bulk waste generators with new ₹25,000 fines to enforce mandatory segregation and processing rules.

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has announced the implementation of a ₹25,000 (AED 1,100) fine for entities found violating the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules. The penalty is part of a tightened enforcement strategy to address illegal dumping and improper waste handling across the city. Strict Penalties for Bulk Generators The ₹25,000 fine specifically targets bulk waste generators (BWGs) who fail to comply with statutory waste processing requirements. Under the SWM Rules 2016, establishments producing more than 100kg of waste daily are required to process organic waste on-site. The GCC will now levy the maximum penalty on those found dumping mixed waste or failing to maintain functional composting facilities. Authorities confirmed that inspections will intensify across commercial sectors, including hotels, marriage halls, and large residential complexes. In addition to the flat fine for bulk generators, the corporation maintains a tiered penalty structure for individual households and smaller traders who fail to segregate waste into wet, dry, and domestic hazardous categories.
