Bollywood Faces Shutdown Warning Over Unsafe Crew Working Conditions

The Federation of Western India Cine Employees warns of a total production halt over 'inhumane' working conditions and unpaid wages.

The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has warned that Bollywood production faces a total shutdown unless studios and producers implement immediate reforms to working conditions. B.N. Tiwari, President of FWICE, stated that the industry’s technical crews and daily wage workers are operating under "inhumane" circumstances that risk the collapse of the film sector. FWICE, which represents approximately 500,000 workers across 32 crafts, cited chronic issues including 16-to-18-hour shifts, delayed payments, and a lack of basic workplace safety. Despite the multi-billion dollar valuation of the Indian film industry, technicians often face payment cycles exceeding 90 days, leaving many in financial distress. The union is demanding the strict enforcement of existing Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) regarding wages and working hours.
