American Hospital Dubai has successfully completed the first robotic mitral valve repair surgery in Dubai, treating a 49-year-old patient with severe mitral regurgitation. The minimally invasive procedure marks a shift in how complex cardiac surgeries are managed within the emirate’s private healthcare sector. Advanced Robotic Precision The surgery was led by Dr. Firas Al-Ani, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist, and Dr. Pervaiz Chaudhry, Consultant Cardiac Surgeon. The team utilized the Da Vinci Xi robotic system to repair the heart valve through small incisions, avoiding the traditional sternotomy—a process where the chest bone is cracked open to access the heart. Robotic-assisted surgery allows for 3D high-definition visualization and greater instrument maneuverability compared to conventional laparoscopic tools. The 49-year-old patient, who suffered from significant leakage of the mitral valve, was discharged within three days of the operation, significantly faster than the week-long recovery typically required for open-heart surgery.
